Saturday

street art

I just found and really liked  Shafiur Rehmaan's street art video on vimeo. It shows the progress of a painting from a photograph depicting a woman and child which Shafiur Rehman found in a book about photography, titled 'Ma o Shishu',or 'Mother and Child'.
The wall is part of a restaurant in London's Brick Lane area, which is home to people of different nationalities, mainly South-East Asian.I can imagine the interest it must have awoken in passers-by,because of its touching scene. The ending made me really sad.To damage and demolish that piece of wall which pictured nearly half of the mothers face was in my opinion a brutal act...watch.

Life in a day

I just watched the trailer for 'life in a day'-the documentary shot in a single day, july 24,by people around the globe...and I wondered,if I had participated what kind of film I would have submitted? I really don't remember exactly what my day looked like, except that it was the day after my sisters birthday,so I must have been busy clearing away dishes and gathering together discarded wrapping paper and ribbon,or such.Apart from that there are certain constants in everybody's daily life's,like preparing a meal or going to work/school,walking the dog and most likely that is what I did,too...so chances are I had a pretty ordinary day.
But it could easily have been the day that one of the black&white spotted puppies that where born on the empty plot behind our house walked out of their pizza box house for the first time...or the day my sister got news of her acceptance into the college she had applied to go to.It could have been...

Have a lovely weekend...

Friday

Breakfast

Today we had potato and masala parathas for breakfast. It was terribly hot already in the morning,so i made Mango Lassi instead of tea...
Stuffed parathas are easy to make, just prepare the filling before you actually make them so it can cool down a bit.Working with hot filling is very annoying.

For the Dough:
                       2 cups flour(all purpose,or bread flour),cold milk,a pinch of salt

In a bowl  knead all the ingredients into a dough. The dough should be a bit on the harder side,as this will let you handle the parathas easier once they are stuffed.Knead till a smooth, springy dough is formed.Cover with clingfilm, set aside to rest in a cool spot till the stuffing is prepared.

For the Stuffing:
1kg washed, peeled and boiled potatoes,1 bunch washed, plucked and finely cut coriander or                       parsley leaves,1 peeled and diced medium onion,2-3 washed,de-seeded and finely cut green chillies,1level teasp.Garam Masala,1teasp. crushed cumin and coriander seeds, salt to taste.
Vegetable oil or Ghee for frying.

In a bowel mash the cool potatoes into a rough puree, add all stuffing ingredients, mix well.Taste for salt.

Heat a large,non-stick pan on medium heat.
Flour hands, work surface and rolling pin.For each paratha shape dough into two small rounds and flatten on work surface.Roll into thin disks.Put about 2 tblsp.of stuffing on one disk, distribute evenly to about half an inch of edge of your disk.Lay second disk on top of stuffing and pinch edges on top of each other,so no stuffing comes out while frying.
Carefully lift paratha off your worksurface and place on pre-heated pan.Cook for 3-4 min, till dough looks a bit cooked, than gently turn over with a spatula.Cook for 3 min. more and add 2tblsp. oil or ghee to the pan.Fry the paratha till at least golden in color,if it looks too drey, add a little more fat. When ready the paratha should be crisp and smelling delicious.

Place on kitchen paper towels, cut into wedges and enjoy with achaars, chutney and yoghurt.

Monday

for the love of tea

Do you drink tea? I do! A lot. Tea is my choice of hot beverage at almost every time of day.Tea gives me an instant boost of energy when I feel out of sorts, and calms my nerves when feeling 'like too little butter stretched over too much toast'-as dear Bilbo Baggins put it.
I drink tea on its own with just as much gusto as with a sandwich, biscuits&cake, fruit; even with lunch and dinner, mostly in place of a glass of water.Which does get you noticed, especially if dining in a restaurant.
Would I be living in one of those bygone eras where tea was associated with lots of etiquette and pomp I most probably would have followed enthusiastically every nonsensical detail, and while serving tea I would have asked with as much style as possible 'lemon or milk?'.
Naturally such deep rooted love for all things tea does open up a rather wide door into the world of tea and tea related things, like teapots, cups, recipes for things to nibble on while happily slurping away. For the real tea enthusiast there is tea-related jewelry, books on tea,tea-history and tea-etiquette,and beautiful tea-rooms and houses around the world.Museums are good places to find something tea-ish,and a trip to one of the hill stations in India or other tea plantations, like Candy in Sri Lanka would surely be a treat.
In this weekly post I will try to find out what tea lovers around the world do,buy, try out and where their passion takes them.
Till than, have a nice cup of tea

Peach Compot

I made some peach compot over the last weekend.Peaches are in season and the stalls are full with them.I enjoy them more when cooked or baked, than when they are raw.For cooking and baking purposes I like to buy fruit which is a bit unripe, hard and sour.My batch of peaches was quite sour so I adjusted the amount of sugar accordingly.I also always peel of their skin, which stays a bit hard even after cooking.
I like to cook compot on a low heat, giving whichever fruit I use enough time to gently break down and mix with the sugar and spices. Therefore it is best to cut your fruit into the biggest chunks possible as compot opposed to jam should not turn into a puree like consistency.
For storing I can't really give advice out of experience, because these sort of things never last very long around my household. But I guess if you fill the compot into sterilized glass jars it should last a while.I store my batch in the fridge because I don't have a cellar. The thing with compot is that the sugar content is lower to that of jam and quite a good amount of fruit juice stays in it,which tends to facilitate rapid yeast production,so compot turns bad quite fast.
You can have compot with nearly every sweet thing you would use jam with, like pancakes, brioche, yogurt, ice cream, even homemade noodles...

I hope you enjoyed this post, have a nice day!

Thursday
